Abstract
Ethephon, NAAm, and carbaryl were evaluated as thinning chemicals using 9-year-old apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Fuji). Fruit and shoot growth, leaf nutrient composition, and fruit firmness during storage were investigated.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. Ethephon (500ppm) alone or in combination with carbaryl (600X) thinned the fruits most effectively, while NAAm (50ppm) and NAAm (50ppm) plus carbaryl (600X) were not effective.
2. The central fruits, lateral fruits, fruit clusters, spur clusters (5cm below), and terminal fruits were thinned rather selectively by ethephon alone and ethephon plus carbaryl.
3. Fruit growth and terminal shoot growth were decreased by ethephon and ethephon plus carbaryl treatments as compared with the control, but fruit weight was not different.
4. The contents of total nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in leaves, and fruit firmness during storage were affected little by the chemical spray.
5. The use of the chemical sprays resulted in as much as 36.5 labor saving.
